Spin City:Michael J Fox Favorites 1

THE EPISODES
Instead of giving us full season sets, DreamWorks has given fans two separate volumes of Spin City episodes selected by Michael J. Fox as his favorite shows (meaning fans of Charlie Sheen and the final two seasons will be left out in the cold).
In Volume One, we get eleven of Fox's favorite shows, starting out with the pilot episode, in which we are introduced to his character of Deputy Mayor Mike Flaherty, as well as the rest of the mayor's staff.
In addition to the pilot, disc one of this 2-DVD set also contains the following episodes:
"Meet Tommy Dugan" – Guest star Woody Harrelson plays a school janitor who has won the "Mayor for a Day" contest.
"Dog Day Afternoon" – Mike decides to appease the upset Police Commissioner by having a ceremony for a recently deceased police dog. But the dog's body is lost, and replaced with a drugged double.
"Family Affair, Parts I & II" – Meredith Baxter Birney co-stars as Mike's mother and gets involved romantically with the mayor (Barry Bostwick).
"Miracle Near 34th Street" – Mike must deal with the aftermath when the mayor accidentally tells a group of children that there is no Santa Claus.
"The Paul Lassiter Story" – Mike worries about whether he has prostate cancer and helps the mayor with his new book…with the assistance of guest star Donald Trump.
Disc Two of this set contains these episodes:
"The Pope of Gracie Mansion" – When the Pope pays New York City a visit, Mike believes that a close encounter with a truck may have divine connections.
"Catcher in the Bronx" – This is the first episode of Season Four, which introduces the character of Caitlin Moore (played by Heather Locklear).
"A Tale of Two Sisters" – Christine Taylor guest stars as Caitlin's sister, whom Mike winds up going out with, causing Caitlin to get jealous.
"Casino" – A raffle is conducted to raise money for the city's Big Brother program. But Paul (Richard Kind) goofs up in purchasing the tickets – making all of them winners!
THE DVD
Video:
Presented in their original 1.33:1 full frame format, each episode looks pretty good, with rich colors and a nice sharpness to it.
Audio:
The episodes are presented in 2.0 Dolby, but sound very good, considering we're only getting a 2.0 track. Each show begins with an introduction by Michael J. Fox which is also in 2.0, but there is a noticeable difference in the quality of the audio on the introduction (which is lower) and that of the actual episodes.
Extras:
Each show has a brief Episode Introduction by Michael J. Fox, telling viewers why he selected it as one of his favorite shows. While Michael is quite entertaining, I must admit that it was somewhat painful watching him during these segments, since his Parkinson's ailment has gotten visually worse since the last time I've seen him on camera. The only other additional material on these DVDs are six public service announcements for The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, which are located on Disc Two and feature Michael and other members of the Spin City cast.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Spin City was one of the better sitcoms to air in the past ten years or so of television series, so I'm a tad disappointed that DreamWorks hasn't opted for full-season sets as opposed to these "Favorites" releases. However, with that being said, Fox does pick some of the better episodes of the series, and it was a joy to watch them again…and see a few that I missed when they first aired. If you're a fan of the show, you'll want to add this set (and Volume Two as well) to your collection.
